Jay Swearingen loves to fish.
So when he retired from Chevron Corp. two years ago after spending 36 years in offshore production and operations in the United States, South America, Asia and Africa, Swearingen was ready to put up his feet and relax.
Hurricane Ike disrupted those plans when it destroyed his cottage at Crystal Beach.
“There's nothing left,” he said. “Not a board or a shingle.”

“The video showed me many things for the first time – like the brain,” expressed Friday Stanley, a student from Lagos, Nigeria. “I’d never seen the brain before. Now I’m excited to go to school. I want to learn science to become a doctor – and watching the videos gives me the confidence that I can do that.”
Friday has been inspired and empowered by the new way his teachers are teaching and by the access they now have to educational resources that allow him to experience the world beyond his village. Friday’s enriching experience and new aspirations are the result of the Learning Center initiative, a strategic partnership between Chevron and the nonprofit Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership (DCGEP).

The Chevron Alumni Community Web site was launched to reach out to former Chevron employees. This online networking community enables former Chevron employees and former employees of legacy companies to consider career opportunities, refer associates, and keep abreast of corporate activities at Chevron. As an Alumni Community member, you can learn about Chevron recruiting events and build your network connections by keeping in touch with other former employees.
In addition, interested technical/professional former employees can use the Alumni site to sign up for Chevron's Bridges program (Bridges). Bridges allows you to be considered for specific contract assignments in the technical disciplines supported by Upstream, Global Gas, and the Energy Technology Company (ETC). Contract opportunities include project assignments as technical specialists, partner representatives, guest speakers, recruiters, mentors, peer reviewers, and advisors to focus areas.

As the Training and Competency Program Manager for Chevron’s Horizon training program, Beth Hutton is responsible for making sure the curriculum used to train new hires with zero to five years of experience is interesting and relevant.
When Hutton started searching for instructors who could energize and inspire these new employees, she turned to Chevron alumni and the Bridges program. “Many retirees and former employees have 20 to 30 years experience. They have spent their professional lives doing just what we’re expecting these new hires to do. You can’t beat that level of experience,” she says.
